How Public Space 3D Rendering Helped Support an Environmental Charity Project in California

CGI is a multipurpose tool that can not only help bring construction projects to life but also stop them if they pose environmental risks. This case study highlights exactly such a situation. Our client Teri Austin is a longtime public activist and the president of the Amanda Foundation — a non-profit charity organization based in Beverly Hills. In July 2023, she reached out to our studio after being impressed by the quality of our visuals. Teri wanted to commission a personal project involving public space 3D rendering.

Essentially, Teri asked our 3D rendering studio to create CGI for a redevelopment of the Weddington Golf and Tennis Facility in Studio City, California. However, she sought not to advance the construction but to halt it — because the proposal would dramatically change this beloved public space. So, the activist wanted our help in showcasing the potential negative impact of the development through photorealistic 3D rendering. The CG visuals were key in presenting these harmful effects to the authorities and raising the community’s concerns.

Intrigued to discover the details of such an unusual task? Read on to get a closer look at our collaboration and see the results!

#1. Project Overview

Being a prominent public figure, Teri has been advocating for environmental causes for over 20 years. And so when she came to us, her goal was clear. She wanted to prevent the destruction of the cherished green public space. Weddington Golf and Tennis, a recreational hub since 1955, was planned to undergo a significant transformation. The development project involved replacing much of the green area with artificial surfaces and towering structures, such as a gigantic 30-foot-tall gymnasium. Our task was to create an accurate site plan 3D rendering to highlight the full scope of the redevelopment and its detrimental impact on the environment.

#2. References and Scope of Work

The scope of work for this public space 3D rendering task included:

  • 3 static images in 4K, 300 dpi quality;
  • Before-and-after animated images in GIF and MP4 formats.

To accurately showcase the results of the redevelopment, our client provided us with the following references:

  • The technical plans for the redevelopment in PDF format;
  • Drone footage showcasing the current state of the public space.

Now, let’s take a look at the outcome!

#2. Project Results

For this project, our team relied heavily on the photo-matching technique. It involves combining real-life imagery with 3D models of buildings. The main goal was to depict the future consequences of the development’s realization, specifically the loss of trees and the increase in artificial surfaces. Below, you can see the results.

And here are the before-and-after animated 3D images. They demonstrate stark contrast between the natural green space and the artificial structures planned for the site.

Teri was delighted with the public space 3D rendering results and is looking forward to continuing our partnership. Here’s the feedback she left in our CRM system.
